What the players knew

The game began in Japan, crossed to the world through Hong Kong, and was made into institutions in the West. All three records are preserved here, side by side, with the same rules: name every source, keep the original words, and mark plainly which claims survive contact with the ROM.

香港 · Hong Kong · The bridge Hong Kong: where the game crossed over The players who carried Derby Owners Club from Japanese into English: the first English board, the whip-chart craft, and the Hong Kong Boys whom the whole Western scene credited. English · The West What the English community knew The export game as its Western players knew it: the 2004 handbooks, the fan sites and forums, Sega's English paperwork, and the people behind them, several of whom are in this community today.

Same method in all three wings: CONFIRMED / OFFICIAL / COMMUNITY CLAIM / DISPUTED, and repetition is not confirmation (the Japanese wing, with no first-party paper of its own, uses no OFFICIAL tag).
The wider preservation story lives at Preservation; claims tested against the ROM at Myths, Tested.
A recovered primary-source set: the 2008 record boards.

And who keeps it alive

Three communities built this knowledge, and one by one they lost the machines it lived on. The archive exists because someone who came after them, John R Reeves III, decoded the game down to its bytes (the byte-level reverse-engineering behind every CONFIRMED tag on these pages), rebuilt the community's old tools as the browser tools in the Toolbox, and got the game running again: the first full eight-player Derby Owners Club on a laptop (Flycast featured the video on their own site), and a free online multiplayer lobby that anyone can play. The history on these pages belongs to other people; this note only answers who carried it forward. The living version is at play.johnreevesiii.com.
